The Building and Safety Standards Branch creates the regulatory environment within which this key industry operates by enacting codes, standards and regulatory systems. The Branch also stewards industry partners, local governments, other Ministries, inter-provincial/territorial counterparts and other organizations that influence or regulate the built environment.

The Building and Safety Standards Branch is responsible for establishing and maintaining technical regulations for buildings and technical systems; fostering partnerships and other key relationships; supporting our regulatory framework via non-regulatory activities, including delegating to our core partners (including statutory and others); and providing advice and input pertaining to the regulatory systems for buildings and technical systems – to partners, industry and other levels of government.

The Senior Codes Architect/Engineer provides technical research and/or technical analysis/evaluation related to the governance framework of building regulatory and safety systems, and the technical requirements of the B.C. Building, Plumbing, Fire, and Safety Codes and regulations, and supports industry, local governments, and other stakeholders in understanding and using the codes. The responsibilities of this position may involve all aspects of leading significant projects, including project management, stakeholder consultation, developing and delivering training, and research and analysis. This position will involve a high degree of interaction with stakeholders and the public, including delivering presentations, participating in committees, and providing direct support to code users.

Qualifications for this role include:
• Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering or equivalent education and three (3) years related experience, OR
• Master’s degree in architecture, engineering or equivalent education and one (1) year related experience, OR
• An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.
• Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a licensed professional in British Columbia with the Architectural Institute of BC (AIBC) or the Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC).

Related experience must include all of the following:
• Experience in planning, developing, implementing, analyzing and evaluating technical regulations or policies related to building codes or standards.
• Experience leading diverse multi-stakeholder groups in the development of policy, technical requirements or discussion papers related to building codes or standards.
• Experience leading complex research projects related to technical regulations or policies, and impact analysis of technical regulation or policy options.

· High level of proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks. Familiarity with REVIT, SketchUp and Photoshop/InDesign an asset.

· Strong management and organization skills. Self-motivated and enthusiastic.

· Ability to work well on your own initiative and as part of a team.

· Must be registered with the AIBC or eligible for registration in the province of British Columbia.
